I am working on embodying an experience within a painting. Plein-Air painting (setting up my easel and painting on location), allows me to better understand a place. I am able to physically interact with the subject and its surroundings, such as the wind, heat, bugs, cold etc... and integrate those elements into a painting. This allows me to find the character of the subject. Trees, clouds or mountains aren't the same, each has been influenced by its environment, thus making it individual and particular to the space it embodies. This individual experience is what I am painting and am only able to find them by experiencing those same things myself.
My larger paintings, done in the studio, are based on an actual experience of painting en plein-air. In these works I attempt to keep the idea of plein-air painting and not simply enlarging the plein-air work but translating the idea of the original to a larger canvas.
We often overlook the simple beauty that is a cloud or a tree. Frequently images of Sacred or Holy figures have been placed within Icons. I have placed some of my work within Icons as commentary on the significance of our surroundings and their importance. By placing the work within these Icons I hope to heighten our awareness to our everyday experience. Each of us interact with nature on some level everyday and in the end we rely on it for our sustenance.
I currently live in Northern Idaho with my wife and 4 children.
